    People,first.

    Everyone you've emailed with gets one chat. Newsletters and receipts wait in Updates.

    • One chat per person. Inbox and Sent are merged, so both sides of the conversation sit together.
    • Group chats. Mail with two or more others becomes a group, named for the people on it.
    • Notes to self land under Me.
    • Wrong place? Move to People or Move to Updates, and the sender stays there.

    • Chat bubbles, or a mail-style list if you prefer. It's one switch.
    • Show original brings back the full message whenever you need it.
    • Subjects show only when they change, as a small label inside the chat.
    • Replies stay in the Gmail thread, so nobody gets a duplicate conversation.

    Give a tag a name, an address, or a phrase. Matching mail gets tagged by itself.

    • Matches check the sender's name and address, the subject, and the body.
    • Pick any color from the palette or the color wheel.
    • Priority floats important tags to the top when you sort by tag.
    • Built-in tags for Updates: Finance, Travel, Shopping, Security, News and more.

    Codes, flights, and deliveries show right in the inbox row. Most of the time you don't need to open the email.

    • Verification codes appear in large type, with a Copy button in the row and in the notification.
    • Flights show departure time and gate.
    • Orders show where they are: shipped, out for delivery, arriving today, delivered.
    • Unsubscribe from the inbox whenever the sender includes a List-Unsubscribe header.

    Your mail stayson your phone.

    People talks to Gmail directly. There's no People server holding copies of your mail.

    • Stored on the device. Chats with people are kept offline, so they open instantly.
    • Sign-in stays locked. Google tokens sit in encrypted storage on the phone.
    • Optional instant mail. A tiny Google ping can wake the app when mail arrives. It knows which phone belongs to which Gmail, nothing more.
    • Settings sync, mail doesn't. Tags, People / Updates moves, and signatures can follow you to another device.

    How grouping works

    Filed by who's on it,not by subject.

    People looks at the people on each message and a few standard email headers. Here are the rules.

    Alex writes to you and copies Sam. The mail stays in Alex's chat, with a chip showing who was copied. A copy alone doesn't start a group.
